Well there you go, the guru has spoken. The teams that concede fewest goals finish higher up in the league. Thanks for that fascinating insight.

It’s quite clear from the stats that dominating possession does not suit us. If the possession stats had been the reverse there is a good chance that we would have won the game because our style of play suits that situation.

Yes, but their games are vs Chelsea, Spurs & Man Utd. I'd be surprised if they got more than 3 points out of those games, so we can still finish above them. Chelsea and Liverpool will probably both finish above us though so I think 5th is more likely, and even then only if we win all 3 remaining games.

Stewie,

I agree, fella. I really don't think we're far off being a very good side. We've been 'good' by any measurement this season - due to that broad defensive and defensive midfield solidity. Hopefully we can show that by finishing in a European spot.

Couple of shrewd acquisitions (at least one striker to compete with/replace when injured Antonio!) over the summer and we could be very competitive. We also need to somehow keep our best player in Rice.

Of course, a few sides are in that position (including Everton). So we're not the only team close to really kicking-on. But we're in that discussion, no doubt.

Yes it was boring when it came to goalscoring opportunities, but I think we were quite dominant with the ball against a team parking the bus and hoofing it towards me holy diver Richalison and Lewin

I think we’re well positioned…more by luck than judgement as it happens.
Truth is that for all the hype about the premier league, success or failure is pretty much defined by how good you are defensively. Liverpool went from also-rans to contenders/winners by signing Van Dijk and Alisson and reverted to type without one or both. Man City have won the league because they signed Reuben Dias, in spite of Aguero having his least productive season. Spurs didn’t get into the top 4 because of Kane – he & Son are having their best season – they got in because they had (one of) the best defences in the league with Trippier/Walker at right back, Vertonghen & Alderweireld in the middle and Rose/Davies at left back. Now they have Joe RODON and Serge AURIER, and they’re nowhere. Arsenal went from winners to contenders to nothingness because they didn’t sign a decent defender for years. And so on and so on.
Even Sheffield United, had a great season because they played basically the same defence all season. This year they lost 3 to injury and lost a shitload of games by the odd goal.

We’re one of very few teams that have 4 genuine, specialist centre backs. Sure, there’s preferred options, and you might want to upgrade one or two, but the drop-off isn’t huge whatever the combination. We’ve got arguably the best right back in the league, and Cresswell has been outstanding. Fredericks is an able deputy at right back and Johnson can cover both flanks if needed. Even Arthur can do something resembling a job if needed. Would love to see some of those players upgraded, but I’m not looking for wholesale changes or investment necessarily.

Everton are fucking dull to watch, that's for sure.

It was fucking dull, wasn't it?

I kept trying to convince myself that the quality didn't matter. But it was a car crash of a game.

South, and look at the games both teams have to play mate.

Until it's mathematically impossible, there's a chance we can nick it.

Have to admit I fell asleep for half the game... not too sure if that was about how boring the game was or the after effects of about 15 hours drinking the day before... oh and STILL feeling fucking crap if you are wondering... anyway... bit boring wasn't it...

We're five points behind Leicester (that's two games' worth of points) with just three games left.

Top 4 has gone.

The battle now is to finish above Liverpool (who will go above us if they win their game in hand), Spuds and Everton. It would be quite an achievement to do that - and one worth celebrating if it happens.

It's not, South.

Leicester have an awful run in, Chelseas run in isn't that straight forwards either.

Top 4 has gone, Block.

We might have to win our last three games just to finish 5th.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Everton - Official Match Thread FT 0-1
Ancelotti done an number on us, putting 5 at the back completely nullified our attacking threat.

It was very, very frustrating. But the 2nd half we played well much like against Chelsea without any real clear cut chances. On another day, Coufal scores and we'd nick an result.

MUST win the last 3 games if we have any chance of getting top 4.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Everton - Official Match Thread FT 0-1
TM - yep, totally agree. Not seen too many Everton sides park the bus like that. But they had done their homework on us and it worked.

I don't get too carried away, as I think this season has seen superb progress. But if we want to kick on beyond this season (however it ends), we've got to somehow find another couple of bargains like Soucek/Coufal. That's making the assumption that post-Covid finances mean we don't have a lot to spend.

However this season ends, I'd say we're tantalisingly at a point where finding a McAvennie/Ward pairing to join the current squad would put us in a very strong position - as it did in 85/86. But, as we all know, finding those kinds of players who can come in and shake things up, on a budget, is very rare.

The positive is that Moyes has even put us in this position at all.

as disappointing as yesterday was, I'm glad we play the way we do & not like everton who resemble a less skilled version of the 1970s dirty leeds side. it's painful watching them

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Everton - Official Match Thread FT 0-1
I think the brutal reality is that we're still a player or two short of being genuine, regular European material.

At our best, with all of our best players fit, we threaten those places right now - like we have all season. We're a good side, not an excellent one: which is a significant step forward against the past few seasons and a credit to David Moyes for restoring some faith and belief in the club.

But if we want to get over the line, I think it will take another Coufal/Soucek signing or two.

That said, we're still in with a shout and we fight to the bitter end.

Didnt think Everton were that great at all, before the goal they didnt create much.......then after the goal just sat back and soaked up whatever pressure we could apply and seemed happy to do so

It was just one of those games where we couldnt create anything, 2nd half we tried to get the ball wide and cross but they had 3 huge CB's playing.....thought that was a strange tactic. Allan in the middle snuffed out everything......we fucked up by going 1-0 down to such a soft sloppy goal

COYI - weird as you've guaranteed multiple times that Moyes won't pick him..

Was he shit last Monday then when our best player first half..

Thierry Henry was drooling over him, yet you think he's shit..

Who's judgement to trust eh...

Fraser. Maybe it wasn't hot as such, but compared to recent weather it was. And it takes humans a few weeks to adapt to temperature changes.

I reffed my sons game yesterday and it felt pretty warm to me, and I barely broke into a jog. Let alone sprint and run at the level prem players have to.

Add on top of that they simply out muscled us (and fouled us all over the park) . It must have been a very tough game
